Akimel is a hero, from the ancient T-ohono Oodham nation, who has been cursed with immortality. He goes to six different civilizations and helps them to solve a mathematical problem. He designs a fraction rug in China, a sewer system in the Hindus Valley, a special brick (that the students actually make) in Egypt, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, a model pyramid for Alexander the Great, and plans the time-line for his trip back to Arizona with the Vikings. With each civilization, students act out the story, learn about one of the six pillars of character and work in groups to help Akimel solve the mathematical problem.

In this session, I'll share how I use the story of Akimel to show students that math is vital to real-life problems. Storytelling also provides the opportunity to integrate subjects such as geography, world history, and character training into mathematics. You'll explore the story - then have a chance to experience and solve one of the lessons!
