Welcome to the 2016 MidSchoolMath National Conference!

Session scheduling is limited to registered attendees - all attendees should receive schedule access via email by Jan. 4 or within two business days of registering. Click on the "More Information" link for detailed directions on accessing SCHED and signing up for concurrent sessions.

Programming begins each morning at 8:15 am sharp, ending at 4:30 pm on Friday, followed by a social hour from 5:00 - 6:30 pm; and ends at 4:15 pm on Saturday.

Data DIY: Placing Formative Assessment Data in the Hands of Students

Research tells us with great clarity that formative assessment and quality, timely feedback are two of the highest yield strategies at any teacher's fingertips. Math teachers have the opportunity to take these strategies to the next level of effectiveness by pairing them with noncognitive factors such as student ownership and reflection.

In this session, I'll share knowledge and tools to re-vision the formative assessment process, moving the locus of control to the student. Traditionally, teachers administer assessments, assign grades, and move on. In lieu of that, I'll present a new model in which students collect and analyze their own data, self-select into intervention and enrichment activities, and engage in reflection that impacts future performance. Data DIY is all about feedback and all about putting assessment in the hands of the primary consumer: the student.

Note: please bring an upcoming classroom or common formative assessment to session. You'll first engage in the Data DIY process in the role of a student, then have the opportunity to apply your learning by following the process with the assessment you've brought.

Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions

This session is based on the NCTM book Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions, which outlines a framework for orchestrating mathematically productive discussions that are rooted in student thinking. The Five Practices framework identifies a set of instructional practices that help teachers achieve high-demand learning objectives by using student work as the launching point for discussions in which important mathematical ideas are brought to the surface, contradictions are exposed, and understandings are developed or consolidated. By giving teachers a road map of things that they can do in advance and during whole-class discussions, these practices have the potential to more effectively orchestrate discussions that are responsive to both students and the discipline.

This workshop will model the framework for you, while you first participate in "student-mode." You'll then have the opportunity to examine samples of student work to simulate the Selecting and Sequencing practices and explore sample problems from various domains, to support implementation in your classroom.

From the growth mindset perspective, we'll explore questions like:

1. Is there a talent or ability you would like to have but don’t? How do you know you don’t have it—what’s the evidence?

2. Did you ever label yourself a failure or loser after something negative happened—failing a test, losing a job, being rejected? Describe a time this happened. How could you have been more like Jim Marshall, who made his humiliating experience into a life-changing opportunity?

3. Think of something about yourself you’ve been wanting to change. What is it? Has a fixed mindset prevented you from doing this? Think about it from a growth mindset and spell out a concrete plan for change.

In this BYOD (bring-your-own-device) session, you'll explore how 3D modeling can support what is taught in any given math curriculum.

After a brief presentation on different applications and software programs available, we'll walk you through the steps of creating a AutoDesk account; logging to TinkerCAD, Autodesk's cloud-based 3D modeling application;, and complete several tutorials. You'll leave feeling comfortable using a 3D modeling application so that they can successfully support their students and gain several CCSS-based lesson ideas to facilitate a deeper understanding of certain math concepts.

Too often, I’ve heard students say that they do not know what they don’t know. They could not articulate what they needed, which made it hard for them to be accountable for their learning.

To help students identify what they don't know, while creating tangible evidence of students’ strengths, challenges and weaknesses in the specific strands of mathematics, I decided to create a system of pre-and-post tests with Student Data Analsysis sheets. On the analysis sheets, students use bar graphs to graph their own data and identify their weaknesses, challenges and strengths.

My vision was that all students would become more conscious of their math skills and that teachers could use the data to drive their lessons. It did that and more - the process cultivated students' eagerness to learn and grow, provided data we could use to differentiate lessons, and fostered a stronger learning environment. Classroom dynamics changed, as students became more in-tune with their progress and teachers had stronger data gear their instruction to the needs of their students and create cohesive lessons.

In this session, we'll share the system we've created (including student reflections), give you the chance to "be the student" and graph your progress, and provide the opportunity to articulate the Data Sheets as a teacher planning for upcoming lessons.

Coherence Map: A Tool for Mathematical Success

Participants will deepen their understanding of the CCSS instructional shifts while engaging with a free digital tool (Student Achievement Partners: Coherence Map) that helps aid in planning lessons and units with mathematical coherence. The tool enhances planning scaffolded learning opportunities that support students who are behind as well as advancing; by identifying gaps in a student’s knowledge as a standard is traced back through its logical prerequisites and by creating challenging learning experiences for students who are ready for more.

The session will be illustrated in the content of Ratios and Proportional Relationships as a visual is provided for participants to connect major work and supporting work within a grade, allowing maximization of instructional time. There will be time for session attendees to explore and plan individually or collaboratively with additional grade specific domains, clusters or standards on their laptops and tablets. What practices will lead students to overcome their gaps in math learning and years of negative math class experiences? And can we be so audacious as to expect them to develop a strong sense of self-efficacy and (gasp!) even joy for mathematics?

This session shares a novel approach to traditional remediation for math students. By incorporating three critical components in the math support class (development of procedural fluencies, support for conceptual understanding, and immersion into rich problem solving tasks) students can discover their inner mathematician!

We will investigate best practices for developing students’ procedural fluencies, as well as their conceptual understandings. These practices include effective strategies for building fact fluency, incorporation of a “Peek at the Week,” and effective use of online platforms for individualized instruction. We will also engage with accessible, rigorous math tasks that promote student moves aligned with the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Math Snacks include animations and games to teach middle school concepts like ratio, proportion, scale factor, coordinate plane and number line using a constructivist approach of teaching and learning. Each lesson is available in English and Spanish and provides numerous support materials for teachers.

In this session, you'll be introduced to Math Snacks, experience a Math Snacks lesson, and learn about utilizing the new Spanish-languge Math Snacks materials. Then, the Math Snacks team from New Mexico State University needs your help!

In the coming years, we will be developing more Math Snacks to address pre-algebra concepts including related quantities, the meaning of variables and an exploration of expressions and equations. We need your input on what you want to see in a future Math Snack game or animation. What are the concepts you know your students need to know to succeed in Algebra, but just don't get? We'll share how we have worked with groups of diverse learners, from high capacity to special needs, and everywhere in betweeen, exploring just how teachers planned for meeting all learning needs. We will talk about the benefits of a unified approach to discipline, accommodations and meeting the needs of all learners, with special focus on their mathematical needs.

Thematic units will be examined, and math's role in those units. A Complete Circle of Cognitively Based Assessment

This session on mathematical cognition will focus will be on geometry and number concepts that arise with an exploration of circles! We will engage in several activities involving measurement and approximation that relate the area and circumference formulas, to help develop a deep understanding of the formulas as ideal models, and see how algebraic manipulation links to seeing physical models from different viewpoints.

We will highlight some historical developments about circles that link circles area and length parameters to rational and irrational numbers, polygons and similarity. After engaging in hands-on learning activities (using compasses to draw circles, and estimating and measuring areas and diameters, using a rope to wind into a circle and then cutting and rearranging pieces to make a triangle of rope lengths), we will discuss the design of appropriate assessments for each type of learning as presented in the cognition scheme.

At the end of the session we will review student work samples and scoring rubrics to address how rubrics can serve to provide detailed feedback to learners. Hence, we will make a complete circle of cognitively based assessment!

You'll leave this session with advanced organizer for mathematical cognition and assessment item design strategies, as well as multiple examples of activities and assessment items they can use for a unit on circles for 7-8th graders.

Everyone Can Earn a 4: Using Packets for Pacing and Continuous Feedback

Sometimes a simple change in the assignment format creates tremendous changes in how students learn.

In this session, I'll share my experience with classroom packets I created and call my "Everyone Can Earn a 4" packets. Students receive these packets at the beginning of a unit or week, depending on the length of the unit, and they work through them at their own pace. They can turn in their packet as many times as they want for continuous feedback, with the goal being to earn a 100% and to master the content.

The session will include a brief explanation of the "Everyone can Earn a 4 Packet", a chance to analyze student work, an open discussion about ideas for future edits and modifications, and a short work time where you can sketch out your own ideas for implementing a similar pratice in your classroom.

Math Circles: Students Can Think Like a Mathematician!

We refer to our students as young poets or artists in their English or Art classes when they create their poems and paintings.  Why not have them learn to create their own mathematics (and not just learn to follow algorithms) as they must in a math circle?

This session introduces the notion and practice of a “math circle.” To quote from the National Association of Math Circles site: "Math Circles bring K-12 students or K-12 mathematics teachers together with mathematically sophisticated leaders in an informal setting, after school or on weekends, to work on interesting problems or topics in mathematics. The Circles combine significant content with a setting that encourages a sense of discovery and excitement about mathematics through problem solving and interactive exploration. Ideal problems are low-threshold, high-ceiling; they offer a variety of entry points and can be approached with minimal mathematical background, but lead to deep mathematical concepts and can be connected to advanced mathematics."

We will run a math circle session, with the mathematical level being accessible and interesting to students in grades 5 though 9 (and even above!). This does not mean that the problems will be easy. They will certainly not be. In general, problems will start from an easily grasped place—perhaps involving some physical object or manipulative—and build to a more generalized understanding of the area of mathematics involved.

Numeric and Algebraic Expressions from Geometric Patterns of Squares

Squares can fit together in a variety of interesting patterns. Some, like grids and checkerboards, are simple but versatile visual tools for understanding topics like multiplication and area. Others, like the Fibonacci Spiral or the Squared Rectangles described by Martin Gardner, are more intricate, and lead to more advanced concepts.

In this session, we will present a series of interesting diagrams which help lead students to write equations and expressions, first with numbers and then with variables. We begin with diagrams which are puzzles: can you figure out the sizes of the squares without measuring, using only their relationships to each other?

Teachers and students alike have found these puzzles intriguing and motivating. Solution methods range from visual estimation, to guess and check, to numerical reasoning, to algebraic reasoning. All of these solution methods then lead into the second set of diagrams, where our goal is more focused: write expressions to show the relationships between the different square sizes. We consider numeric diagrams first, and then generalize these to algebraic diagrams. We will also have some challenge problems that relate to systems of linear equations, tilings of the plane, and other advanced topics.

This session will address the national shift from teaching isolated problem solving skills in mathematics, to teaching mathematics via a problem-solving approach.  A collection of resources will be provided to attendees, which they will be able to take back to their own classrooms and utilize immediately with their students. Multiple versions of problem-solving templates that have been created by teachers involved in the Arizona Mathematics Partnership will be shared, as well as utilized, during the session.  Attendees will actively engage in problem-solving tasks, and will experience, first-hand, how the incorporation of a tool such as a problem-solving template can help to raise their students' performance levels.

It’s a long road from idea to reality. As educators we go to conferences look online and get all these ideas that seem magically and transformative, but then reality sets in. Not all schools are lucky enough to have updated curriculum, one-to-one tech or other new devices . . . meaning you have to get creative at times if you want to bring new activities and tech into your classroom! In this session, we'll talk about how to take an idea and link it with the outcome you want to see in the classroom. We want the ideas to impact student learning, but are they possible? Far to often, we are finding that many activities for the math classroom fail to provide the rigor of experience and interpretation that is required for the common core standards.

In this session, we'll explore a unit on proportional reasoning that we developed as part of an Achieve the Core Writing Jam, in an effort to provide students with activities that help develop proportional reasoning skills and experience the rigor needed to meet the standards. My students love writing on white boards - and I do too! During this session, we'll share and explore about using white boards - big and small - in creative ways.

Having students write on white boards can provide valuable practice and critique time; using white boards shows students that it is okay to make mistakes (since they can be erased so easily), while also providing motivation for students to show their work (so that other students can critique it). They also present a great way to hone presentation skills and ability to talk through and explain their mathematical reasoning.
