Building A Risk-Taking Classroom
Limited Capacity filling up

At last year's conference, teachers shared experiences of struggle with engaging all learners, scaffolding content up and down, and managing a learning environment where students have a broad range of math skill.

In this sesssion, we'll explore these concepts, diving deeper and developing strategies. You'll begin this experience wearing a learner hat, and see short videos of a classroom teacher, before you begin to formulate strategies that will support targeted learning barriers. You'll walk away with a middle school math task, instructional strategies that support differentiation and a focus on clearly communicated rituals and routines.

How to NOT Stand and Deliver: Facilitating Authentic Learning
Limited Capacity filling up

This popular Master Class is being offered twice. While this session is full, ample space is available in the session offered on Saturday at 12:55 pm.

How do we let go of how we were taught to teach math? How do we release textbooks as the core tool in our classroom and realize that we, as teachers, are the most valuable tool in the classroom?

Research supports that the number one impact on student growth is by the teacher, not a math program. This session will dive deep into the fears that underlie our resistance to stepping into our most powerful role. You will experience how to build a community and culture in which facilitates authentic learning.

BYOD: Please bring a laptop, tablet or iPad with you to this session, if you can.

Transforming Math at the School Level
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Too often, only a single teacher tries something new. How do we ensure that change in how we teach math - and how our students think and feel about the subject - occurs at the school level?

Join the team from Turquoise Trail Charter School for a conversation about how they are striving to create an engaging school culture around math. Hear about their efforts, think through challenges, ask questions and share your ideas!

I was never a "math person" as a kid - I did math, and I did it just fine, but I don't recall being particularly interested in anything I learned, and was definitely uninterested in calculus. I first attended the MidSchoolMath conference in 2014, and was so inspired I was willing... Read More →

A Walk in the PARCC: Planning the Risk
Limited Capacity seats available

As most school districts are approaching or already inside the PARCC Spring administration testing window, we find ourselves looking down the list of priority standards and Major clusters. “I taught this but, they haven’t mastered it,” you say. “We’ve touched on this skill but I’m not confident that we’ve gone deep enough.” “My students can do the math, it’s just the word problems that stump them.”

So lets use this time to come together as thought partners to plan out lessons and strategies that will support the kind of math teaching and learning we know is necessary to achieve deeper mathematics thinking. We’ve gathered some content related and pedagogical tools that we can put to use NOW before we leave the conference and lose some papers. The PARCC test isn’t just asking our students to solve a math problem, our students are being tasked with making decisions based on a given situation. Together, we will plan meaningful tasks and design a teaching and learning plan with probing questions that result in an emphasis on understanding multiple ways to approach the problem using collaboration as the secret weapon.

Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!

Note: Try to bring a list of the skills/standards that you haven't covered in your classrooms - but want to - with you to this session!
